Current Location:  Governor's Harbor, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  23
Weather:  Sunny, breezy, high-70s
Highlights: Turned the gen on this morning and made about 90 gallons of water, and also did a load of laundry.  Terry finished and installed the 2nd fishing rods holder.  Raised anchor at 11AM, and had a brisk sail SE down to Governor's Harbor.  Dropped anchor just to the NW of the harbor in a little bay - took a few attempts to get the anchor to set, but finally found some sand soft enough to grab.  Light dinner tonight - chicken, rice, and veggies.

Current Location:  Gregory Town, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  10
Weather:  Sunny, light breeze, high-70s
Highlights: Got ready for guests today by cleaning the boat, cooking brownies, and pulling a light lunch together.  Collected our guests at 10:30, lifted anchor, and left the harbor at 11AM.  Motored down the coast to Hatchet Bay (light winds on our nose), where we dropped anchor and had lunch.  Raised the sails on the way back, and had some good wind for a little while.  Arrived back around 3PM, and shuttled everyone back to shore.  Seemed like all enjoyed the day, and were impressed with the boat.  Quick dip to cool off, then Terry cleaned some stainless steel while Amy got some exercise swimming around the boat and doing some hull cleaning. Fish from the grill over pasta tonight for dinner, updated the blog, then reading and off to bed.

Gregory Town and New Friends

Current Location:  Gregory Town, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  19
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, high-70s
Highlights: Even busier day today!  Started out motoring from Current to the Glass Window bridge, where we anchored and took the dinghy into the beach.  Walked up to the bridge, where we took some photos and climbed around the rocks, then walked about 3/4 mile south to the Queen's baths, which is an amazing collection of tidal pools and rock formations.  Back to the boat around 2pm, and motored down the coast to Gregory Town, where we anchored in a picturesque little lagoon.  One of the home owners (Bill Herzig) came by in his motor boat with a couple of friends (Russ and Eric), and after chatting a bit, they invited us up to the house for drinks.  Well, one thing led to another, and before you know it, we were having a steak dinner with the 3 of them, plus 2 other native Eleutherians (Derek and Judy).  Dinner included sour kraut, sours (local lemonade-type drink), pototaoes, salad, and drinks.  We spent the evening in wonderful hospitality and interesting conversation.  Invited all of them to join us for a day-sail tomorrow, and then back to the boat around 9PM for early bedtime.

Current Cut

Current Location:  Current Cut, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  12
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, mid-70s, showers during the morning
Highlights: Busy day today!  Started early with Terry working on the 2nd fishing rod holder while Amy did a load of laundry (taking advantage of the marina electricity).  Left the marina at noon, and motor-sailed south past Meeks Island to Current Cut.  Scouted out the west side of the island, then went through the cut to check out the east side, but after going only a little ways, realized that best anchorages were on the lee side of the island.  Current going through the cut is fierce (approx 10 knots at mid-tide - we were fortunate to catch it near hide tide, so only had to fight about 4 knots of current coming back.  Dropped anchor around 3, then dinghied over to a nearby coral islet and snorkelled for about an hour.  Crystal clear water, and saw many varieties of fish, including a 3-foot sting ray, a couple of small barracudas, and a lion fish.  Back to the boat for some R&R, a gorgeous sunset, and California Yellowtail from the grill (with rice and corn).  Fish was yummy - tasted similar to tuna or amberjack.  Updated the log, then reading and off to bed.

Current Location:  Spanish Wells Yacht Haven, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  11
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, mid-70s, showers during the night
Highlights: Started out the day by testing out the anchor chain link - put a significant amount of stress on it to see if it would hold, and all looks good.  Raised anchor around 10, and motored east over to Spanish Harbor.  Checked into the marina, then walked around the town, and had lunch at Buddah's.  Met the owner (Buddah Pinder), who was nice enough to chauffeur us around town in his souped-up golf cart.  Took us to get some fishing gear, then dropped us off at the grocery store, where we picked up some fresh produce.  Walked back to the boat, then Terry met some guys at the marina bar, and was able to buy 5 pounds of fresh fish from one of them (California Yellowtail??), which we'll plan to eat tomorrow.  Light fare for dinner tonight, and early bed.

Current Location:  Royal Island Harbor, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, mid-70s, afternoon showers, as well as during the night
Highlights: Quiet day in Royal Island harbor today - we're the only boat here!  Finished gluing up the shelving unit, and put the first coat of paint on.  Reading and resting during the afternoon/evening.  Amy's back is better, but now she's got a kidney / UT infection (most likely the result of passing a stone).  Was feeling almost normal by dinner-time.

Royal Island Hike

Current Location:  Royal Island Harbor, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, mid-70s, showers during the night
Highlights: Amy worked on the back window screening this morning while Terry assembled the port-side shelving unit.  Took the dinghy out this afternoon to the north side of the island, and found a road/path that ran the length of the island.  Followed that to where the abandoned resort and marina construction lay - was like walking through old Roman ruins, but these buildings were probably less than 20 years old.  Amazingi how much cost and effort went into construction of the road, buildings, and infrastructure, and then to just walk away from it all - crazy!  Left-over Diana's meal tonight for dinner.  Amy's back is hurting tonight - she's worried that she's passing a kidney stone.  Hopefully she'll feel better in the morning.

New windlass controller

Current Location:  Royal Island Harbor, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, mid-70s, showers during the night
Highlights: Decided to stay in Royal Island for a couple more days.  FYI, around 2007, Roger Staubach and Jack Nicklaus invested in the island with plans for a marina, resort, and golf couse, but that effort was abandoned a few years later.  For now, a private resort with 5 villas can be rented for the bargain-basement price of $10,000 per night, in case anyone is interested.  The anchorage is very sheltered, and strong easterly winds are expected through Friday, so we'll enjoy the next few days here.  Terry installed the new windlass control this morning while Amy did some cleaning and organizing down below.  Took the dinghy around the anchorage this afternoon, and chatted with a few of the other boaters, then joined Andre and Anja Schulz on Step by Step for sundowners.  Back to the boat for dinner (Diana's meal), and then reading and early bedtime.

Miles Traveled:  61
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy, mid-70s
Highlights: Raised anchor at 6:30AM, and had nice 9-hour sail down to Eleuthera.  Seas choppy (2-4 feet), and winds 15-20 knots out of the east.  Made Egg Island channel around 4:30, and then motored over to Royal Island harbor (very nice sheltered anchorage).  Had a trolling line in the water some of the sail, but no bites, so mac and cheese with hot dogs for supper, then early bedtime.

Current Location:  Lynard Cay, Abacos, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Sunny, light winds, high-70s
Highlights: Last full day in the Abacos.  Worked on a couple of projects today (screening for the saloon windows, and a cabinet/shelves next to the chart desk).  Slow progress on both fronts - everything takes longer on a boat!  Read and napped this afternoon, then lobster salad for dinner tonight.  Early start tomorrow - headed south to Eleuthera!

Current Location:  Lynard Cay, Abacos, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, high-70s
Highlights: Amy did a couple loads of laundry this morning, while Doug andTerry went snorkelling, looking for fish, lobster, and/or conch for dinner.  Not much luck with anything until Terry spotted a "lobster hotel" while getting towed behind the dinghy.  12" pipe (about 3 feet long) was in about 25 feet of water, and had a small lion fish guarding the entrance.  Terry killed the lion fish with the Hawaiian sling, then he and Doug hauled the pipe up and dumped 4 good-sized lobsters into the dinghy.  Cooked on the grill that night - wonderful dinner with Doug and Keline.

Current Location:  Lynard Cay, Abacos, Bahamas
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, high-70s
Highlights: Took the dinghy into Little Harbour today.  Walked around town and up to the site of the old light house, then toured the Johnston family museum, which is filled with bronze castings done by Russell (father) and Pete (son).  Some beautiful work on disply.  Had lunch at Pete's Pub, and met Doug and Quelin Smith from Adunia (old Hatteras trawler).  Got to chatting with them, and made plans to hang out for a couple of days with them, and also get some fishing gear from Doug.   Took the dinghy over to the bight to see if we could find some lobster - found one, but couldn't get him out of his hole.  Supposed to be surf and turf Valentine's Day dinner tonight, but ended up with just the turf half from the grill - still yummy.

Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, high-70s
Highlights: Lazy morning off Hope Town, then raised anchor and headed 9 miles south to Lynard Cay, just across from Little Harbour.  Plan was to head down to Eleuthera tomorrow, but after experiencing 3-4 foot swells coming in from the passages out to the Atlantic, we've decided to stay here until the weekend, when winds and waves should die down.

Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, mid-70s
Highlights: Broke out the water maker, and filled the starboard tank (100 gallons) in about 3.5 hours.  Worked very well, and water tastes fine, although a bit strange since it's got no chlorine or other minerals added.  Since we were running the generator anyway, also did a couple loads of laundry.  Walked over to Nippers for an early afternoon rum punch (plus we wanted the exercise), then motored over to Marsh Harbour, arriving late afternoon.  Picked up the 4 main Miami TV stations on the antenna, so watched a bit of TV, then early bed time.
