Lovely Sail to Bequia

2/3/2022

EOD Location:  Admiralty Bay Mooring, Port Elizabeth, Bequia, SVG
Miles Traveled:  26
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy (15-25), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Dropped the mooring ball at 7AM this morning and had a lovely (but somewhat choppy) trip up to Bequia.  Wind was 20 knots at 50 degrees off our starboard bow most of the way, so we had a reef in both sails, but were able to sail about 2/3 of the trip before needing to start the engines and head up into the wind.  Swell was 5-6 feet most of the way, but interval was around 7 seconds, so not too bad of a trip.  Arrived in Admiralty Bay around 11AM, averaging almost 6 knots for the trip.  Grabbed a mooring ball close to XYZZY, then after Terry inspected the chain, since he was already in the water, he did a bit of hull cleaning as well.  Relaxed and read for the rest of the day.  Leftover lobster over pasta with a salad for dinner tonight.

EOD Location:  Saltwhistle Bay Mooring, Mayreau, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Deb and Dennis headed up to Bequia this morning to look for better internet, but we had one more paid night on our mooring, so figured we would wait until tomorrow to leave.  Lots of chores done today - started out with defrosting the fridge, then laundry, cleaning the hull, and taking care of a few maintenance items.  Tarik picked us up at 6PM for a great lobster BBQ at Last Bar Before the Jungle (we were the only diners in the restaurant), then back to the boat around 7:30 for a quiet evening before bedtime.

Exploring Mayreau Village

EOD Location:  Saltwhistle Bay Mooring, Mayreau, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Amy and I went with Dennis around the point to Mayreau village this morning to check out the sites and see what we could find in the way of groceries.  Walked up the hill to see the old Church of the Immaculate Conception, then further up to check out the great views of the cays and our anchorage.  Visited the "supermarket" on the way back to the dinghy, but it didn't live up to its name - very limited selection of goods, and almost no fresh produce.  Back to the boats around 1:00, then a lazy afternoon of reading and napping before dinner on the boat.

Drunk Freddy

EOD Location:  Saltwhistle Bay Mooring, Mayreau, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Got the SUPs down for the first time in 2 years today, and paddled around the bay and over to the beach.  Just like riding a bike - no falls, good exercise, and very enjoyable.  Planned to have Freddy (our boat boy) pick us up for a lobster BBQ on the beach at 6 tonight, but he was a no-show, plus it started to rain around 6:30, so we gave up and cooked sausage, peppers, and onions over pasta instead.  Freddy showed up around 8, very drunk, asking if we were ready to go to dinner.  Had to gently decline his offer the first time, then a bit more forcibly when he showed up again around 10PM.  Told him to check with us tomorrrow, but I think we're done with Freddy - lots of other boat boys to work with here in the bay.

EOD Location:  Saltwhistle Bay Mooring, Mayreau, SVG
Miles Traveled:  4
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Our anchorage was starting to get rolly with the winds shifting to the north, so we dropped the mooring ball around 10 and motored over to Saltwhistle Bay on Mayreau.  Worked with one of the boat boys (Freddy) to drop anchor a couple of times, but too much grass on the bottom, and the anchor wouldn't hold.  Finally grabbed a mooring ball instead.  Probably a good choice in the end - shortly after we got settled, all the charter boats started coming in, and the bay was filled to capacity and more by late afternoon.  Last time we had this crowded of an anchorage was in Charleston back in 2017.  Spent a restless night keeping an eye on all the boats around us, but no incidents to speak of.  The bay is very calm and picturesque - we'll probably stay a few days here.  Greek salad with steaks off the grill for dinner tonight - yum yum!  Dominoes on XYZZY for a fun way to wrap up the day.

Loving Tobago Cays Park

EOD Location:  Tobago Cays Anchorage, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy (15-25), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: We've been really enjoying our past fewe days here in the Tobago Cays.  Went snorkeling off of Horseshoe Reef yesterday, where we saw lots of fish, interesting coral, and the highlight of the trip, 2 nurse sharks (each about 5 feet long) sleeping under some overhanging rocks.  Topped off the day by going over to Romeo's for a fabulous lobster BBQ on the beach.  Today we did the hike up Petit Bateau for some exercise and great views, then drinks at Romeo's before heading back to the boat. Amy and I had a nice pre-sunset walk on the beach, then capped the night off with dominoes with Deb & Dennis.

EOD Location:  Tobago Cays Anchorage, SVG
Miles Traveled:  6
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), low-80s
Highlights: Raised both anchors this morning around 10:00, then motored around the west and north sides of Union Island, past Mayreau, and over to the Tobago Cays.  Grabbed a mooring around 11:30 with no issues, and paid for the 4-day special rate, since we'll be here at least through Sunday.  Dove the mooring ball to inspect the chain, then read and lazed around for the rest of the afternoon.  Leftovers for dinner tonight, then watched a DVD before turning in.

Tangled Anchor Lines

EOD Location:  Chatham Bay Anchorage, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), low-80s
Highlights: Had to untangle our anchor lines today.  The wind in Chatham Bay funnels down through the hills and spins anchored boats in all directions.  Because we had 2 anchors set, the lines became crossed a few times as the wind pushed us around in circles.  We had Dennis plus a neighbor boater in the water working on the puzzle, Amy driving the boat, and Terry coordinating from the bow to get everything sorted out, but finally got all the tangles cleared.  To celebrate our last night here in Chatham Bay, we went to the Tenuto Resort for dinner with Deb and Dennis, then back to our boat for dominos before turning in for the night.

Fun Dinghy Ride to Clifton

EOD Location:  Chatham Bay Anchorage, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), low-80s
Highlights: Terry and Dennis took the XYZZY dinghy around the point and over to Clifton today.  They had to wind their way through the abandoned Ashton Marina project, plus through some pretty shallow reefs getting into Clifton harbor, but were able to make it without any problems, and without getting too many splashes in the face.  Visited the ATM, then several grocery stores as well as the central open market to pick up produce and staples, then back through the reefs to the boat by early afternoon.

Glasses Lost and Found

EOD Location:  Chatham Bay Anchorage, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), low-80s
Highlights: Had an interesting couple of days yesterday and today.  Terry was cleaning the bottom of the boat yesterday, and when he got back on the boat, couldn't find his glasses.  Somehow, they had either blown overboard or been knocked into the water.  He spent some time snorkelling behind the boat, but couldn't find them, and since it was getting late, we dropped a marker to continue the search today.  Dennis brought his Snuba gear over around noon, and we spent about an hour criss-crossing the area.  No sign of the glasses, so gave them up for lost, but as we were packing up and putting everything away, Terry spotted the glasses on the lower edge of the stern, where they had lodged beside the propane line.  Had a good laugh about the whole wasted afternoon, but at least we got to practice our snuba skills!

Enjoying Chatham Bay

EOD Location:  Chatham Bay Anchorage, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy (15-30), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: We've spent the last few days relaxing and enjoying our time here in Chatham Bay.  The hills surrounding the bay seem to funnel and swirl the wind in many directions, but the waters are calm and clean, with almost no swell even on windy days.  We took the trail along the north side of the bay for some fabulous views of the anchorage, and further along, a great overlook for pictures of Mayreau and the Tobago Cays.  Tuesday night we treated ourselves to a lobster barbeque at Seckie and Vanessa's Beach Bar (very tasty!).  We've been disappointed with the snorkeling sites (we had heard good things about the north shore, but we were less than impressed), but we've taken the opportunity to scrape the barnacles off the bottom of the boat, and also get some basic maintenance and cleaning projects done.

Chatham Bay Anchoring

EOD Location:  Chatham Bay Anchorage, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  4
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-15), low-80s
Highlights: Defrosted the fridge this morning, then went into Clifton to explore and get some lunch.  The town is quite small, almost no cars on the streets, and folks are very friendly.  Many businesses were closed, but a couple of small produce markets were open, so we picked up a few provisions.  Had pizza for lunch at the same restaurant as yesterday (Bougainvilla), then back to the boat around 2PM.  Cast off the mooring lines and motor-sailed about 4 miles around the southwest side of the island to Chatham Bay, and dropped anchor around 3PM.  Took a couple of attempts to get the anchor to set (Dennis was in the water helping us find a good spot), but finally found some sand that was thick enough to grab the anchor and hold for us.  Napped and relaxed rest of the day - looking forward to some snorkeling and exploring over the next few days.

EOD Location:  Clifton Bay Mooring, Union Island, SVG
Miles Traveled:  13
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-15), low-80s
Highlights: Terry picked Dennis up at 8AM, and they went into the customs office to clear out.  All went smoothly, but took about an hour total to go through the process.  Dennis took their boat into the fuel dock, then we raised anchor at 10:30 and had a lovely motor sail across the Martinique channel and up to Union Island.  Kept the wind about 45 degrees off the bow, and averaged 7.5 knots most of the passage, with 2-3 foot seas and 12-18 knots of wind.  Arrived at Clifton Bay around 12:30, followed one of the boat boys to a mooring ball, then took our dinghy into the customs office to clear in.  Smooth process overall, with lunch squeezed into the middle, and by 3:30 we were back at our boats and ready to relax for the rest of the day.  After almost 2 years of sheltering in Grenada, World at Bay has finally crossed an international border into a new country.  We will always be grateful for our time spent in Grenada, but it feels really good to finally be able to continue our journeys.

EOD Location:  Tyrell Bay Anchorage, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  3
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-15), low-80s
Highlights: Motored around the point to Tyrell Bay this morning as prep for clearing out of Grenada tomorrow.  Dropped anchor beside XYZZY, then spent the afternoon completing on-line forms and uploading documents to the SVG arrivals website in order to get approval to clear into SVG.  Deb and Dennis invited us over for dinner and dominoes, both of which we enjoyed immensely.  PCR test results came back via email while we were enjoying dinner (everyone negative), so that was a big relief!  Back to our boat around 9PM to turn in early - big day tomorrow!

PCR Tests and Marlin for Dinner

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Took our dinghies over to Hillsboro today to get our PCR tests done.  Dock at the town has definitely seen better days - the stairs leading up from the lower landing were almost totally rusted off, but we skipped up one by one to safety.  Stoopped at Patty's Deli first to pick up some baguettes with cheeses and other goodies, then walked a few blocks up to the health center.  Wait wasn't too bad, and we were back to the main street around 1PM, looking for lunch at the Mermaid Restaurant, but turns out they were closed, so we decided to take the dinghies over to Paradise Beach Bar for lunch instead.  Had fresh marlin steaks with avacado and papaya for lunch.  First time we've ever tried marlin, and it was delicious.  Tasted a bit like tuna, but more flavor.  Back to the boat around 3PM where we relaxed and read the rest of the afternoon and evening.  Tomorrow, we'll take the boats over to Tyrell Bay for easy access to customs, then check out of the country on Friday and head for SVG.

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (10-20), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: We've been lazing around for the past few days, enjoying the weather and beautiful views here in Paradise Beach.  Mostly we've been relaxing and reading, while fitting in a few chores (laundry, making water, cleaning the stainless steel, etc) when we need to.  Went to Paradise Beach Bar tonight for a last dinner ashore, and will take the dinghy over to Hillsboro tomorrow to get our PCR tests done.  All in all, we've really enjoyed getting back out on the water, but it's just about time to say our good-byes to Grenada and head north.

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (15-25), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Chores day today.  Amy did a load of laundry and made rolls while Terry fixed a sail drive monitor, then hooked up the water maker and added 130 gallons of fresh water to the tanks.  First time in over 18 months that we've used it, but all good - fortunately, we pickled the filters properly before the long-term storage.  Baked beans with hot dogs and rolls tonight - gotta maintain that New England Saturday night tradition!

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, windy (20-30), occasional showers, low-80s
Highlights: Dennis and Terry took the dinghy around the point to Tyrell Bay to pick up a few items at Budget Marine (Dennis), and to stop into Customs to extend our cruising permit.  We plan to check out of the country on Friday, so will get PCR tests Wednesday, then stop back into Customs for our final checkout Friday morning.  Then we'll be off to the Grenadines.  Spaghetti dinner on the boat tonight, then reading and iPhones rest of the evening.  We have only very slow internet out here on the bay, so NetFlix and blog updates aren't an option for us, but we have plenty of books downloaded to our Kindle readers.

Relaxing in Paradise

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (12-18), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: Slept in late, relaxed and read most of the day, and pretty much just enjoyed being out of the marina finally.  Went to Paradise Beach Bar for dinner with Deb and Dennis (we shared pizza plus a tuna salad), then back to the boat around 8:30 PM to read and turn in for the night.  The bar has a water taxi service that we really like to use, since it saves us from beaching the dinghy and we also don't have to navigate across the bay in the dark.

Return to Carriacou

EOD Location:  Sandy Island Mooring, Carriacou, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  34
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (12-18), occasional brief showers, low-80s
Highlights: We dropped our mooring ball at 9AM this morning, raised sails, and had a very nice motor-sail with XYZZY up the coast and across to Carriacou.  We had about 15 knots of steady wind at 45 degrees off our starboard bow most of the trip, so ran one engine to keep our course steady.  Our cat needs at least 55 degrees before she can sail without engine assistance, and that just wasn't going to happen today.  We averaged over 6 knots with very light seas, and arrived at Sandy Island around 2:30.  Picked up one of the last balls in the field off the island, while XYZZY grabbed a ball off Paradise Beach.  Got the boat squared away, then napped and relaxed the rest of the afternoon.  Egg omelet with salad tonight for dinner, FaceTimed with Jennifer for awhile, then reading and games before turning in for the night.

EOD Location:  Dragon Bay Mooring, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  3
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy (15-20), occasional showers, low-80s
Highlights: Said our goodbyes to all the staff at Port Louis Marina this morning, then finished all the last-minute items (turn in the cable box, settle our bills, empty trash, stow the water hose, disconnect shore power, etc) before our departure.  Off the dock at 1PM (same with XYZZY), then motored out of the harbor and up the coast a couple of miles to Dragon Bay, where we grabbed a couple of mooring balls and settled in for the evening.  Good to finally be back out on open water after sitting for so long in the marina.  Stir fry for dinner tonight, then kindle readers before turning in for the night.

EOD Location:  Port Louis Marina, St. George's, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Partly sunny, breezy (15-20), mid-80s
Highlights: Spent last 2 days getting items checked off our lists in prep for finally leaving Port Louis Marina and heading north.  Terry finished up the maintenance projects (cleaning filters, changing coolant in the stbd engine, etc) while Amy sewed new screens for the back salon windows, since the old ones were starting to dry-rot.  Started the process of breaking in the new outboard motor today, and went over to the gas dock to fill the spare gas cans for the dinghy, then pool and nap time during the afternoon.  Weather is looking good for a Tuesday or Wednesday departure - we're ready as soon as the weather settles down!

New Year's Eve with Deb & Dennis

EOD Location:  Port Louis Marina, St. George's, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Partly sunny, breezy (15-20), afternoon/evening showers, mid-80s
Highlights: Forgot to mention in yesterday's post the most exciting news of the day - Deb and Dennis from XYZZY are back!!  Flight landed on time (around 12:30), they arrived at the marina around 2PM, and after dumping luggage and a quick change from winter to summer clothes, we caught up on all the news over lunch at Victory.  They crashed after getting back to the boat while Terry mounted the new outboard onto the dinghy.  Today, to celebrate New Year's Eve, we went to dinner at Sails, and then back to the boat for dominos and conversation.  Didn't quite make it to midnight, but all of us were very happy to be back together again.  Here's to 2022 - may she kick 2021 in the butt as she escorts her out the door!

Stolen Outboard, Hard Lesson

12/30/2021

EOD Location:  Port Louis Marina, St. George's, Grenada
Miles Traveled:  0
Weather:  Mostly sunny, breezy, mid-80s
Highlights: Woke up this morning to an unpleasant surprise.  We had left our dinghy tied to the side of our boat overnight because Patrick wanted to use it to wax the outside hulls on XYZZY.  Didn't lock it so he could start early without bothering us.  Got up around 7:30, noticed it was missing, but figured Patrick had used it to run an errand.  Patrick showed up around 8:45 without the dinghy, and we suddenly realized that it must have been stolen.  Reported it to marina security and management, looked at security camera footage (no help), then Patrick and Terry took Patrick's boat around the harbor and shoreline to see if it might have washed up somewhere.  Eventually discovered it at the fish market docks, about a mile from the marina.  Two fishermen had found it floating offshore around 2AM, and towed it back it.  Outboard motor was gone, along with a few items that we keep in the dinghy, but dinghy itself was intact, so we towed it back to our boat.  Long story short, after a few calls and decisions, we decided to move on, and purchased a new 18HP 2 stroke from Budget Marine.  Outboard was delivered this evening, and we no longer have to worry about the old one with all its related problems.  Lesson learned - ALWAYS lock the dinghy to the boat, and whenever possible, hoist it in the davits!
