Current Location: Cowen Creek Anchorage, just south of Beaufort, SC
Miles Traveled: 55 Weather: Sunny, breezy, mid-60s Highlights: Raised anchor at sunrise, and motor-sailed down the ICW approx 55 NM to Cowen Creek, a very nice anchorage just south of Beaufort. Set the anchor around 3PM, just in time to watch the last half of the Panthers victory. Amy's still fighting her cold, so YOYO for dinner, then she turned in early while Terry watched the Red Sox win the World Series.

Miles Traveled: 0 Weather: Partly cloudy, chilly, breezy, low-60s Highlights: Slept in and lazed around most of the day today. Amy's cold not much better. We did get 4 loads of laundry done today, plus a little bit of organizing and cleaning, but mostly read, watched TV, and caught up on sleep. Dinner tonight of mac and cheese with hot dogs, and then turned in early. Current Location: Charleston Harbor Marina, Charleston, SC
Miles Traveled: 55 Weather: Mostly sunny, breezy, low-60s Highlights: Raised anchor at sunrise (6:45), and motor-sailed up Winyah Bay to the ICW, and then down to Charleston Harbor. Made good speeds (avg of about 6.5 knots), and caught the tides just right through most of the trip, seeing high tide through McLellandville, and a falling tide under the Charleston bridge. Tied up to the marina dock around 4PM, checked in, grabbed an early dinner of meat loaf, baked potatoes, and cooked carrots, then turned in for the night. Amy's cold is still keeping her down, and with bad weather coming in, we're looking forward to a lazy day tied to the dock tomorrow. Current Location: Winyah Bay Anchorage, near Georgetown, SC
Miles Traveled: 68 Weather: Sunny, breezy, low-60s Highlights: Frustrating day today. Raised mainsail and anchor at 8AM, looking forward to a good sail with reaching winds from the north and 1-2 foot following seas. Instead, we got NE winds and 3-4 foot quartering seas. With the wind directly behind us, we normally set the sails "wing-and-wing" (genoa out to one side of the boat, and mainsail off the opposite side). This works well if you can keep the wind directly behind you, but the quartering seas wanted to swing our stern around every time a bigger wave came through. We struggled through without the auto-pilot most of the day, but around 3PM, with the winds fading, we pulled in the genoa, and finished the crossing with main sail and engines. Dropped anchor around 5PM just north of the Georgetown light house, grabbed a quick dinner, watched Survivor, and were asleep by 9PM. Current Position: Longitude 79.55.222W Latitude 33.0.376N (Detyen's Boatyard)
Miles Traveled: 0 Weather: Cold morning (ice on the deck!!), but warmed up quickly, sunny, high 60s Highlights: Trip to Home Depot first thing this morning to find a replacement water line (no luck - will need to special order), but got a couple of shut-off valves as a temp fix. Boat got lifted out of the water, then we loaded up the car, cleaned out the fridge, defrosted the freezer, and reviewed with Sean projects list and gave him a quick tour of the boat. Hit the road around 2:30, and arrived in Hickory at 7:30 for holidays and family time. Last log entry for a while - should be back to the boat around mid-December. Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 33.0.376N (Detyen's Boatyard)
Miles Traveled: 28 Weather: Chilly morning, then sunny, breezy, high in mid 60's Highlights: Raised anchor (or at least tried to) around noon in order to motor up to Detyens Boatyard. Couldn't get the anchor up (snagged on something big), so finally cut it loose. Debated diving on it, but both Amy and I weren't very fond of that anchor, so no big loss. We'll replace with a 55lb Delta, and we already have a 55lb Mantus on order for a 2nd anchor. Dropped Amy at the dock to drive the car, and I motored up the Cooper River to Detyens, arriving around 5pm. Had a small scare en-route - water supply line to the port head sink burst, and had water spraying into the boat. Took a minute to figure out what happened, but shut the pump off and all was good. Last night on the boat - chilly, but quiet. Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor)
Miles Traveled: 0 Weather: Chilly morning, sunny, nice afternoon, high in mid 70s Highlights: Last full day in Charleston, so figured good day to see the town. Walked around the peninsula, got lunch, then took a 1-hour carriage tour. Back to the boat around 4:30 for light supper, reading, and some college football. Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor)
Miles Traveled: 0 Weather: Chilly morning, sunny, nice afternoon, high in low 70s Highlights: Boat projects day. Pulled wire and connections for the U/W blue lights, then mounted the flag pole off the stern top. Chet from Waterland Canvas came out to do rough measures for the cockpit cushions. Miles Traveled: 0 Weather: Chilly morning, then sunny, breezy, high 60's Highlights: Shopping day at West Marine, Tuesday Morning, and Home Depot. Picked up spool of 18-2 wire, pillows, plastic wine and drinking glasses, SS fittings, microwave, and other misc items for the boat. Back around 4PM to the boat for dinner and early bed. Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor)
Miles Traveled: 25 Weather: Chilly morning, then sunny but windy, high 50's Highlights: Final day of training today. Worked with John to calibrate nav instruments, then out to the Atlantic to plot courses and take bearings. Seas were still very rough, so didn't spend too long outside. Anchored near previous location, but got woken up around 1AM by anchor dragging, and had to circle around for new location. Tapped another boat in the process, and side of our boat got damaged slightly. Will need some fiberglass repair done on the ding. Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor).
Miles traveled: 5 Weather: Sunny, light breeze, high of 81 (wow!) Highlights: Day 2 of training with Sterling. 3 hours in the class again, then back to the boat for more practice maneuvers. Wrapped up around 4, just in time to catch the shuttle to Harris Teeter for some provisions, then back to the boat for dinner and early bedtime. Feeling good about the training - starting to get comfortable with managing sheets and sails, and getting the boat pointed in the right direction while sailing (probably a good thing to know!!). Current Position: Longitude 79.57.500W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor).
Miles travelled: 6 Weather: Sunny, light breeze, high 70s Highlights: Training starts - yeah!! Classroom time with Sterling from 9:30 to about noon, then on the boat for practice raising sails, tacking, and reefing. Chowder dinner, watched Survivor and game 7 of world series, but asleep by the 5th inning. Current Position: Longitude 79.28.657W Latitude 32.46.507N (Ashley River / Charleston Harbor).
Miles travelled: 35 Weather: Sunny, light breeze, high 60s Highlights: Raised anchor at 8AM, and motored out to the Atlantic for final run down to Charleston Harbor. Dropped anchor around 2PM, then took the dinghy into the marina to meet Will and Lynn from the sailing school. Light dinner and early bed. Spoke with Mom, Diana, Tom, Jennifer, and Allan. Current Position: Longitude 79.16.061W Latitude 33.3.020N (ICW MM 433, just south of McClellanville).

Current Position: Longitude 79.16.061W Latitude 33.21.926N (Georgetown Landing Marina (ICW MM 408).
Miles travelled: 0 Weather: Chilly, breezy, sunny, high 60s, low 40s Highlights: Walked around G-town today, saw lots of old/interesting houses, stopped for lunch and watched some of the Panthers football game. Finished a couple of projects around the boat, and tried to get the Ubiquity bullet configured - mostly good, but couldn't get the final connection working. Will try again in Charleston. Current Position: Longitude 78.49.473W Latitude 33.21.926N (Georgetown Landing Marina (ICW MM 408).
Miles travelled: 50 Weather: Chilly, breezy, sprinkles, high 60s Highlights: Left Myrtle Beach at 7:30 in order to beat the high winds expected late afternoon. Beautiful stretch of the ICW down the Waccamaw River into Georgetown. Hit bottom pretty hard at one point trying to avoid a barge - no damage, but lesson learned - pulling over and waiting is better strategy than trying to motor past at speed when limited space available. Walked to liquor store to stock up - owners were nice enough to give us a ride back (of course, we were their best customer of the day - lol). Current Position: Longitude 78.3.693W Latitude 33.45.153N (Grand Dunes Marina (ICW MM 358, Myrtle Beach)).
Miles travelled: 47 Weather: Sunny, breezy, high 70s Highlights: Left the marina around 9:30, and shortly after, the Coast Guard paid us a visit. Inspected the boat, recommended a couple of minor adjustments/corrections, and said we had a beautiful boat. Uneventful trip after that on a very pretty stretch of the ICW. Pulled into Grand Dunes Marina around 4:30, and had a very good spaghetti dinner on the boat. |
