Current Location: Jackson Creek Anchorage (Deltaville, VA)
Miles Traveled: 10 Weather: Mostly sunny, breezy, high-70s Highlights: Raised anchor around 10 and motored over to the Fish Bay marina for gas and diesel (after shooing all the mosquitoes off the boat). However, they had electrical problems, and pumps weren't operating. We waited around for a couple of hours for maintenance to show up, and even borrowed the marina bikes for a 2-mile ride to the grocery store and back, but around 2PM, pumps still weren't fixed, so we gave up and motored around the point to the Jackson Creek marina. This marina isn't even marked on ActiveCaptain or Aquamap, but turned out to be a very nice, full-service facility, and Jackson Creek turned out to be great for anchoring overnight with good protection all around. Topped the tanks up with 50 gallons of diesel, then dropped anchor around 3:30. Terry is fighting a cold, so he napped while Amy did a load of laundry and baked rolls. Pierogies with kiebasa, cabbage, and cranberry sauce for dinner tonight, then watched some TV (DWTS) before turning in for the night. Up early tomorrow to begin our overnight sail down to Ocracoke - calling for light rain in the morning, but should be good wind and weather otherwise.

Current Position: Longitude 75.43.626W Latitude 34.55.794N (Adams Creek (ICW MM 188, just south of the Neuse River)).
Miles travelled: 58 Weather: Sunny, beautiful weather, high 70, light winds from NE Highlights: Long day motor sailing down Pamlico Bay. Worst stretch behind us, and we've been incredibly lucky with the weather. Dropped anchor at 5PM, near 3 other boats. Pasta salad for dinner, some casual TV, then early bedtime. Current Position: Longitude 76.02.931W Latitude 35.39.020N (Raschal's Bay (west side of Pamlico Bay, south of Manteo)). Miles travelled: 60 Weather: Sunny, beautiful weather, high 70, light winds from NE Highlights: Weighed anchor about 7:30, and headed south via Manteo. Chart plotted a course west of Roanoke Island, and off we went. Got all the way to the old Roanoke bridge before we realized clearance was only 45 feet. Clearly marked on the chart, but we totally missed it. Backtracked and went around east side of the island - cost us about 1 hour travel time, but lesson learned - double check the course against the charts! Dropped anchor around 6PM, had dinner, planned tomorrow's course, and crashed. Touched the antenna at Coinjock bridge, but no other bridge challenges. Current Position: Longitude 76.17.968W Latitude 36.35.506N (ICW MM29, just past Pungo Ferry Bridge).
Miles travelled: 29 Weather: Sunny, beautiful weather, high 75, no winds Highlights: Bridge and locks day today. Temporary fix of windlass switch, topped off the fuel and water tanks, then left marina around 10 in order to catch Pungo Ferry bridge at low tide (4:30PM). Scraped the antenna on 2 bridges (PF, plus the Great Bridge Bypass at MM 12.9). Fortunately, windvane didn't hit - figure we can clear 64.75, but anything less will be trouble. Set anchor at 5pm just off the ICW, nice dinner of rice and steamed veggies, watched last episode of House of Cards/Season 1, then early bed. Current Position: Longitude 76.19.772W Latitude 36.50.509N (Tidewater Yacht Marina Portsmouth VA).
Miles travelled: 51 Weather: Sunny, high in 70s, low 50s, light winds from North Highlights: Weighed anchor about 7:30, and headed south. The windlass up switch didn't work, so had to pull it up by hand. Took the switch apart, and looks like some corrosion in the circuits. Will need to solder a jumper wire in tomorrow - Doug bought me a soldering iron as a boat-warming gift. Arrived at Tidewater Yacht Marin (MM0 of the ICW) around 4pm after beautiful day motoring down the bay. Met up with Richard, Wendy, Adam, Doug, and Robin for dinner at the marina restaurant. Didn't get to bed until around 11PM. Current Position: Longitude 77.17.797W Latitude 37.40.223N (Rones Bay).
Miles travelled: 54 Weather: Sunny, high 60s, low 40s, light winds from North Highlights: Nice day motoring down the bay. Weighed anchor at 7:45, and averaged about 7.5 knots most of the day. Nice little anchorage just south of Indian River (west side of the bay). Watched last episode of House of Cards, then early night. |
